GB – Magdeburg hemispheres – The instrument is composed of a pair of hemispheres with perfectly matching edges, a valve placed below them and a base. It was conceived in 1650 by German physicist Otto Von Guericke to demonstrate the existence of atmospheric pressure. If the two hemispheres are matched and they contain air, then they can be easily detached. However by removing the air from the inside, through the use of a pump, the two hemispheres remain attached to each other thanks to the pressure. Their name derives from the fact that in 1656 in Magdeburg, in a demonstration, using hemispheres of about 60 centimeters in diameter and equipped with large brass rings, it took about thirty horses to overcome the resistance of the air, and separate the hemispheres.
