IT – L’anello di Gravesande, ideato dall’olandese Willem’s Gravesande nel XVIII secolo, è uno strumento usato per illustrare la dilatazione termica volumica di un solido. Un supporto verticale sorregge, tramite un tratto di catena, una sfera metallica piena e, per mezzo di un sistema a scorrimento con vite di bloccaggio, un anello metallico. A temperatura ambiente, la sfera riesce ad attraversare l’anello, anche se la differenza tra il diametro della sfera e il diametro interno dell’anello è abbastanza piccola. Tuttavia, una volta riscaldata, la sfera non è più in grado di passare attraverso l’anello, dimostrando così un incremento del suo volume sotto l’effetto del calore.
GB – Gravesande ring – The Gravesande ring, conceived by the Dutch Willem’s Gravesande in the eighteenth century, is a tool used to illustrate the thermal expansion of a solid volume. A vertical support supports, through a section of chain, a full metal sphere and, by means of a sliding system with locking screw, a metal ring. At room temperature, the sphere manages to cross the ring, although the difference between the diameter of the sphere and the internal diameter of the ring is quite small. However, once heated, the sphere is no longer able to pass through the ring, thus demonstrating an increase in its volume under the effect of heat.
